Mother-tongue is a divine gift. It is very important in the sense that the people of a country express their idea, thoughts, feelings, and emotions clearly through it. Bangla is the mother language of the people of Bangladesh. It is the sixth language in the world according to the use. In order to make this language state language of Bangladesh, people had to undergo significant suffering and struggle. To make it State Language, the people of Bangladesh came out and sacrificed their lives on 21st February. For this reason, 21st February is a red-letter day in our national life. According to the UNESCO on November 17, 1999, this day is now the International Mother Language Day. This day is the culmination of a serious protest and events that took place between 1948 and 1952. After the independence of Pakistan, the ruling authority of west Pakistan recognized Urdu as the state language of Pakistan in 1948 and tried to impose it on the Bangla-speaking majority of people. In 1952 protests erupted throughout East Pakistan against the imposition of Urdu and for the recognition of Bangla as the state language of East Pakistan. The ruling authority imposed section 144 all over the country as the protest grew stronger. However, when students, politicians, and general masses brought out a procession in the Dhaka University area defying the 144, the police charged fire on the procession. As a result, Rafiq, Zabbar, Salm, Barkat, Shafiq, and many others sacrificed their lives. Finally, Bangla was recognized as the state language. Our language day is our national event . But the matter of pride is, this national event has crossed our national boundary and become universalized. On November 17, 1999, UNESCO proclaimed February 21 to be International Mother Language Day and it was first observed on February 21, 2000. International Mother Language Day is the recognition for our language movement and the heroic sacrifices of the language martyrs. From then on, our language day is observed globally as International Mother Language Day.21st February is observed as Shaheed Day In Bangladesh. In this day our people sacrificed their lives for the sake of mother tongue, Bangla. Bangla is as dear to Bengalese as their mother. On the 21st of February 1952, our people dedicated their lives to our dear language. In this day, the brave sons of the country-  Rafiq, Salam, Zabbar, and many others sacrificed their lives and took away Bangla as their mother tongue from the hands of the west Pakistan rulers who wanted to impose Urdu as our language. We remember our martyrs, their sacrifices, and pay homage to the heroic souls. We have erected monuments known as a Shaheed Minar in remembrance of them and on 21st February we offer flower wreaths and stand silent in honor of them. It sowed the seed of our liberation war. We are the only nation in the world who sacrifice lives for the mother tongue. International Mother Language Day is a glorious recognition of our history and a great achievement. We will always remember them with respect and love.
